MTB racing in the Ardennes

Hammer Sport CC went off road last weekend in Houffalize, Belgium – the mountain bike capital of Northern Europe.

We took part in the Roc d’Ardenne, a 3 day mtb festival. There were events every day to include everyone from the U5s and complete novices to UCI World Cup riders. Despite the unseasonably freezing weather, the atmosphere was fantastic. We raced in the Big Marathon (in the UCI ‘Open’ category) on the Sunday morning. The route was lengthened to 115 km with 3,200 m of climbing, all completely off road!

Starting in minus 1 and light snow, the course was very wet with some extremely deep mud and was best described as very ‘technical’.

From 159 race starters, Lindsay Walker and Andrew Thompson rode very well to finish the brutal race with good results:

Andrew – 7:35:16 – 25th overall – 3rd in Male 50-54

Lindsay – 7:51:42 – 35th overall – 6th in Male 45-49

Lindsay (coached by Hammer Sport) raced on Hammer Sport supplied Miche K4 carbon wheels with a Schwalbe Rocket Ron front tyre and Racing Ralph on the rear.

Andrew rode his Hammer carbon 29er with an XT groupset, Ritchey bars (carbon) and wheels with Conti Mountain King tyres front & rear.

A great event, and we’ll be back (hopefully in warm and dry weather!)
