Success for club members Jez Meades (60+), Kev Favis (50-59) and Andrew Thompson (40-49) in La Thomas Voeckler sportive race from Morzine last Saturday. Jez & Andrew both took 2nd place in their respective categories with Andrew finishing 12th overall. Kev Favis did a storming ride to finish in 33rd place.
The race started in Morzine (Haute Savoie) and immediately climbed the 1st category Col du l’Encrenaz, then the Col du Ramaz (1st cat) before descending to the edge of Cluses. The next climb was the very gentle Col du Chatillon (4th cat), followed by the Col du Morillon (1st cat) with a tricky, technical descent made even more tricky & technical by a fresh coating of very loose chippings! It was then onto the legendary Col du Joux Plane from Samoens (HC) before descending to Morzine for the final climb of La Montee d’Avoriaz (1st cat) to finish in the centre of the ski resort of Avoriaz. Conditions were cold for the time of year, with a few showers. All this was packed into a course of just 113 km, but what it lacked in distance it more than made up with in ascent with +4,000 m of climbing.
There were just under 200 entries and even a category for 45 km/h e-bikes It was interesting to overtake e-bike riders as their batteries started to fail! The race was won by professional Perring Quinmenneur of Pro Conti team Direct Energie.
It was the first event in honour of Thomas Voecklar and great to line up next to him on the start line (he rode an e-bike!). Safe to say we’ll be back next year!
In the days after the race, we also sneaked in a few rides in glorious sunshine with clear blue skies and incredible views. All in all, a fantastic club trip and a superb finale to Hammer Sport CC’s alpine campaign this summer.
