Gent-Wevelgem cyclo (sportive) weekend, Belgium
March 23 ~ 7:00 am - March 26 ~ 7:00 pm
Kick start your European season with a trip to Flanders to take in a weekend at the classics!
We’ll travel on the Friday (via the tunnel), arriving in Kortrijk in time for an optional 25 km loosen up ride. With plenty of great places to eat, Kortrijk makes a great base!
On the Saturday morning, it’s an 8 km warm up ride to Wevelgem to ride one of the cyclos (like a standard UK sportive) with a choice of 60, 90, 135 and 220 km routes, meaning all ability levels are very welcome. These take in iconic Flanders roads with a few baby cobbles thrown in for good measure. All routes go through the stunning Menen Gate at Ypres, which is a very humbly experience. They also include the WW1 Plugstreet dirt road sections which the race a unique character. The longer routes include the climbs of the West Flanders Hills and the iconic Kemmelberg. The bar by the finish provides the perfect recovery venue!
The Sunday provides the choice of either riding over the Kemmelberg and then into Ypres to watch the pro race, or going East into the Flemish Ardennes and riding the Fabian Cancellara Classic (another great cyclo) with a choice of routes up to 148 km. This gives you the chance to ride much of the course used in the previous Friday’s E3 Harebeke Classic race and takes in some of the most iconic climbs including the Kwaremont and Paterberg. The big screen at the finish venue provides the perfect location to watch the pros racing in Gent Wevelgem whilst recovering over a local beer.
Monday will be heading home, maybe with a short ride in the morning.
